. . . étant  +  verbe principal (p.p.)(e.s.es) (but cannot be a member of the Secret Travel Club verbs – listed in Appendix B)


(Note: When using the "Passif direct" format in the "Participe présent" , the subject of the verb "être" is really the direct object of the participe passé (p.p.) of the main verb.

The subject may come before or after the participe passé (p.p.), but in either case, the p.p. agrees in gender and in number with that subject/direct object.

Examples:

 

Example 1 (masculin singulier)

 

Le texte, étant corrigé au bureau, est ensuite envoyé au service d'imprimerie.

The text, being corrected at the office, is then sent to the printing service.

 

Example 2 (masculin singulier)

 

Étant corrigé au bureau, le texte est ensuite envoyé au service d'imprimerie.

Being corrected at the office, the text is then sent to the printing service.

 

Example 3 (féminin pluriel)

 

Les lettres, étant corrigées au bureau, sont ensuite envoyées aux clients.

The letters, being corrected at the office, are then sent to the clients.

 

Example 4 (féminin pluriel)

 

Étant corrigées au bureau, les lettres sont ensuite envoyées aux clients.

Being corrected at the office, the letters are then sent to the clients.

Houses being sold before week's end can no longer be visited the following week.

Houses getting sold before week's end can no longer be visited the following week.
