Sujet  + "avoir"(Conditionnel présent)  +  "vouloir"(p.p.)  +  verbe principal (Infinitif)

Sujet  +  (aurais,  aurais,  aurait,  aurions,  auriez,  auraient)  +  voulu  +  verbe principal (Infinitif)

Examples:

 

Normal meanings: (Used for hypothetical statements or questions regarding the past)

 

Example 1 (masculin / féminin singulier)

 

Il (elle) aurait voulu acheter le livre.

He (she) should have liked to buy the book. (UK usage - same as would have liked to buy)

He (she) should like to have bought the book. (UK usage - same as would like to have bought)

He (she) would have liked to buy the book.

He (she) would have wanted to buy the book.

He (she) would like to have bought the book.

 

Special meanings often used in law or journalism:

 

Example 2 (masculin / féminin singulier)

 

Il (elle) aurait voulu acheter le livre.

He (she) allegedly wanted to buy the book.

He (she) has allegedly wanted to buy the book.

He (she) has reportedly wanted to buy the book.

He (she) is alleged to have wanted to buy the book.

He (she) is reported to have wanted to buy the book.

He (she) is said to have wanted to buy the book.

He (she) reportedly wanted to buy the book.
