Example 1 (masculin / féminin singulier)

Il (elle) pouvait composer des chansons.

He (she) could compose songs ... (routinely, at some time in the past)

He (she) used to be able to compose songs ... (routinely, at some time in the past)

He (she) was able to compose songs ... (routinely, at some time in the past)

He (she) was able to compose songs (was in a "state" of being able to compose ...)

He (she) would be able to compose songs ... (routinely, at some time in the past)

Example 2 (masculin / féminin singulier)

Il (elle) pouvait composer la chanson.
