Sujet (nom ou pronom, objet direct du verbe principal)  +  (étais,  étais,  était,  étions,  étiez,  étaient)  +  verbe principal (p.p.)(e.s.es)  +  depuis  +  (an amount of time / a moment in time)


(Note: When using the "Passif direct - Option 1" format, the subject of the verb "être" must also be the direct object of the participe passé (p.p.) of the main verb, and because it also precedes the p.p., the p.p. agrees in gender and in number with that subject/direct object.)

Example 1 (masculin singulier)

 

Le texte était corrigé depuis deux jours.

– Il était corrigé depuis deux jours.

The text/It had been corrected for two days. (and still was)

 

Example 2 (féminin singulier)

 

La lettre était corrigée depuis mercredi.

– Elle était corrigée depuis mercredi.

The letter/It had been corrected since Wednesday. (and still was)

When the direct object appears as a noun:

On (sujet indéfini)  +  verbe principal (Imparfait)  +  objet direct  +  depuis  +  (an amount of time / a moment in time).

The texts/They had been being corrected the day before his welcoming speeches for years. (and were continuing to be)

The texts/They had been getting corrected the day before his welcoming speeches for years. (and were continuing to be)

 

Example 2 (féminin pluriel)

 

On corrigeait à fond les lettres officielles depuis la découverte de plusieurs fautes d'inattention.

On les corrigeait depuis la découverte de plusieurs fautes d'inattention.

The official letters/They had been being carefully corrected (ever) since the discovery of several errors of inattention. (and were continuing to be)

The official letters/They had been getting carefully corrected (ever) since the discovery of several errors of inattention. (and were continuing to be)

Example 1 (masculin singulier)

 

On parlait au candidat depuis cinq minutes.

On lui parlait depuis cinq minutes.

The (male) candidate/He had been being spoken to for five minutes (already). (and still was)

The (male) candidate/He had been getting spoken to for five minutes (already). (and still was)

 

Example 2 (féminin singulier)

 

On parlait à la candidate depuis 8h00 du matin.

On lui parlait depuis 8h00 du matin.

The (female) candidate/She had been being spoken to since 8:00 A.M. (and still was)

The (female) candidate/She had been getting spoken to since 8:00 A.M. (and still was)
