Passif direct – (Infinitif présent)

. . . être  +  verbe principal (p.p.)(e.s.es) (but cannot be a member of the Secret Travel Club verbs – listed in Appendix B)

(Note: When using the "Passif direct" format, the subject of the verb "être" must also be the direct object of the participe passé (p.p.) of the main verb, and because it also precedes the p.p., the p.p. agrees in gender and in number with that subject/direct object.)

Example 1 (masculin singulier)

Le texte a été modifié au bureau avant d'être corrigé.

The text was modified at the office before being corrected.

The text was modified at the office before getting corrected.

Example 2 (féminin singulier)

La lettre a été modifiée au bureau avant d'être corrigée.

The letter was modified at the office before being corrected.

The letter was modified at the office before getting corrected.

Example 3 (masculin pluriel)

Tous les documents vont être vérifiés et classés.

All the documents are going to be checked and filed.

Before selling, the house underwent several renovations.

Example 3 (gender-neutral, number-neutral)

Afin de se vendre plus rapidement, la maison a été complètement rénovée.

In order to be sold more quickly, the house was completely renovated.

In order to get sold more quickly, the house was completely renovated.
