"devoir"(p.p.)  +  verbe principal (Infinitif)

. . .   +  verbe principal (Infinitif) – Must be preceded by the auxiliary verb "avoir" (Infinitif, or conjugated) to create a Compound tense.

Example 1 (unaffected by gender or number)

 

dû chercher la solution – Can only be used if preceded by "avoir" (Infinitif, or conjugated)

had to find the solution.


Note: the p.p. of devoir (dû, due, (s)) can also be used as an adjective, meaning owed / owing, or due.

In such cases, it does not need to be preceded by the auxiliary verb "avoir"
