Subjonctif présent – with vouloir


A)   When the introduction to the Subjonctif présent is in a present time frame:

Present time-frame introduction + que  +  Sujet  +  "vouloir"(Subjonctif présent)  +  verbe principal (Infinitif)

Present time-frame introduction + que  +  Sujet  +  (veuille, veuilles,  veuille,  voulions,  vouliez,  veuillent)  +  verbe principal (Infinitif)


B)   When the introduction to the Subjonctif présent is in a past time frame:

[Past time-frame introduction]  +  que  +  Sujet  +  "vouloir"(Subjonctif présent)  +  verbe principal (Infinitif)

[Past time-frame introduction]  +  que  +  Sujet  +  (veuille, veuilles,  veuille,  voulions,  vouliez,  veuillent)  +  verbe principal (Infinitif)

A) Present time-frame introduction (When the introduction to the Subjonctif présent is in a present time frame):

 

Example 1 (masculin / féminin singulier)

 

Je suis (present time frame) surpris qu'il (elle) veuille acheter le livre.

I am (present time frame) surprised that he (she) does want to buy the book. (for emphasis, or negative)

I am (present time frame) surprised that he (she) is wanting to buy the book. (less frequently used)

I am (present time frame) surprised that he (she) wants to buy the book.


B) Past time-frame introduction (When the introduction to the Subjonctif présent is in a past time frame):

 

Example 2 (masculin / féminin singulier)

 

J'étais (past time frame) surpris qu'il (elle) veuille acheter des livres.

I was (past time frame) surprised that he (she) did want to buy (some) books ... (routinely, at some time in the past) (for emphasis, or negative)

I was (past time frame) surprised that he (she) did want to buy (some) books. (was in a "state" of wanting to buy (some) books) (for emphasis, or negative)

I was (past time frame) surprised that he (she) used to want to buy (some) books ... (routinely, at some time in the past)

I was (past time frame) surprised that he (she) wanted to buy (some) books ... (routinely, at some time in the past)

I was (past time frame) surprised that he (she) wanted to buy (some) books. (was in a "state" of wanting to buy (some) books)

I was (past time frame) surprised that he (she) was wanting to buy (some) books. (was in a "state" of wanting to buy ... ) (less frequently used)
